Before any decision, check each factor below:
*Will this affect your financial aid?  Talk with a One Stop counselor.
*Will you maintain full-time student status?  See 13 credit policy.
*Are you an international student?  Visit ISSS.
*Are you an athlete with U of MN?  See your athletic counselor.

*Have you talked with your instructor or TA?
*Have you studied in groups or with a tutor?
*Have you found support for your personal circumstance?
*Have you talked with your adviser?
*Have you explored this Resources list?

***CHOICES TO DROP CLASSES***

1)  Until the End of the Second Week of Classes (week 1 & 2 of fall/spring semester):
You may drop a class without any formal permission.  You would not receive a "W" on your transcript.  You can officially drop online through One Stop.  You may also ADD classes during this period, but need instructor permission during week 2.  See Drop / ADD Deadlines

2)  Until the End of the Eighth Week of Classes (week 3-8 of fall/spring semester):
You may drop a class without any formal permission.  You would indeed receive a "W" on your transcript.  You can officially drop online through One Stop.

3)  From Week Nine to the Last Day of Instruction (before Finals Week starts, during fall/spring semesters):
You would need College permission to withdraw from any class.  See the specific "petition" options to withdraw, below.  See an adviser right away to talk through, complete forms, and submit additional documentation (if extentuating circumstances exist).  You would receive a "W" on your transcript -- but this does not affect your GPA.  You adviser is glad to talk with you.
      OPTIONS:
      a)  Withdraw from all classes.
      b)  Selectively withdraw from one or more classes, due to extenuating and documented circumstances.
      c)  Withdraw from one class using your "One-Time-Only" privilege (which does not require extenuating or verifiable circumstances, but can be used only once during your undergraduate career).

For IDL (Independent and Distance Learning) and SUMMER classes:  Note different deadlines!!

AFTER THE END OF THE SEMESTER
There may be other withdrawal options available (after the Last Day of Instruction), IF the final exam was NOT taken.  Talk with an adviser, as soon as possible.
